About George Norris

Geroge Norris (1928-2013, Victoria, BC) attended the Vancouver School of Art and studied with sculptor Ivan Mestrevic at Syracuse University. He won a BC Scholarship for a year of advanced study at the Slade School of Art in London, in 1965.

In addition to his formal art training, Norris worked as a carpenter’s helper, miner, survey crew member, mill worker, and logger. He taught throughout his career at UBC, the Vancouver School of Art, Penticton Summer School of Art, Banff School of Fine Arts, and Emily Carr College of Art. From 1953-1983 he worked full time as a sculptur/designer in metal, stone, and wood. He died at the age of 84 in his hometown, Victoria.

    This piece came to be known, affectionately, by students as the “prairie chicken.” This is perhaps because from a certain angle the sculpture indeed looks like a prairie chicken with its wings ruffling.
