A World Full of Colour is a Beautiful One

Sergey Ryutin

In February 2022, long time Bridgeland business owners, the Kullar family, were victims of a racist attack that left hate messages sprayed on their building. The Bridgeland-Riverside community rallied behind the family, collecting donations to have a mural painted on the wall. Along with matching funds from the City of Calgary's Inspiring Neighbourhoods grant, $14,000 was raised for this project. The Kullar family and the community worked closely with artist Sergey Ryutin to develop a mural that encourages thoughtfulness and discussion, with the hope of bringing the community together. This beautiful art piece can be seen on the east wall of the Inglewood Art Supplies building.

About the work

This concept is an indirect way to portray the message that a world is a beautiful place, full of colour. What some might perceive as making us different (skin colour, religion, orientation, etc.) is what makes this world an amazing place to live. These "differences" are what forms the actual fabric of our communities, where we live, play and work. The multi-coloured eye symbolizes all races, in combination with a partial female face, a symbol of life. The composition is framed with flowers and leaves, as well as a mountain and forest scene to further convey the message of a beautiful world, as well as to pay tribute to our geography/location.

The sight of a monarch butterfly often evokes a sense of wonder and amazement. Watching its vibrant orange and black wings gracefully flutter through the air is relaxing and soothing. Beyond its beauty, the monarch butterfly holds a deeper significance that extends far beyond its small stature, serving as a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of all living things. It also reminds us about the importance of preserving our natural world for future generations.
Eyes are probably the most important symbolic sensory organ. They can represent clairvoyance, omniscience, and/or a gateway into the soul. Other qualities that eyes are commonly associated with are intelligence, light, vigilance, moral conscience, and truth. Looking someone in the eye is a western custom of honesty. Different eye colors carry different meanings: brown - a sign of intelligence, trustworthiness, and kindness. The number of eyes has different meanings as well: one - subhuman, divine omniscience.

Viewers of the mural are invited to examine the composition and its numerous meanings, with the goal of igniting a bigger conversation, encouraging discussion, and moving in the direction of erasing hate.
