This huge, magnificent monument was meant to arouse lofty sentiments and patriotism.

A longstanding tradition, the equestrian statue was an especially fitting format to honour the 500 volunteers who travelled to South Africa from Alberta with their own horses. As horsemanship in the Boer war played a key role, the Montreal sculptor had a Western horse shipped to his studio. The unknown mounted soldier is dressed in the uniform of Lord Strathcona's Horse regiment.
