About the work

Created by a father-daughter artist duo, this bench is located from a short walk from the base of the stairs on the North bank of Elbow Island. Built from a found bridge girder and concrete casting of a large wooden slab, the bench creates a literal bridge between nature and humankind. In the artists' words, "a bench acts as the vehicle for one or more to gather, an opening to belong in the interconnectedness of life, a place to sit in the experience of inner expression combined with the outer world that surrounds. How can the viewer influence the space? How does the space influence the viewer? How often do the two exist at once?" This installation represents imaginative environments that bridge the conditions to invent creative possibility found in viewing our Earth as truly ours rather than mine. Each bench or seat on Elbow Island was designed by artist duos with a close relationship with the intention of creating their ideal ¿together place¿ to sit, daydream, converse, escape, and watch the river flowing by.
