During the summer, the community garden at the senior centre is full of life and activity. In winter, the plants are cleared away, the garden becomes covered in snow, and the space is rarely used. We created this mural to keep the garden visually engaging and accessible during the winter months, extending its sense of warmth and community beyond the growing season. It includes three colour themes:
Red: The Future Chinatown
Inspired by Calgary’s Chinatown, this piece features a streetlight, golden fish, and vibrant geometric shapes to symbolize community, prosperity, and a hopeful future.
Blue: The Blue Sky City
Inspired by traditional Chinese landscape painting, this piece imagines Calgary’s future as a "Blue Sky City." Flowing clouds, mountains, lakes, and Alberta’s lodgepole pine come together in a peaceful winter scene, while the full moon symbolizes harmony and reunion.
Green: The Spring Garden
This piece captures the beauty and energy of spring in Calgary’s community garden. Inspired by the colourful flowers that bloom each year, it preserves the joy and vibrancy of the season, bringing that feeling to the flower beds year-round.
