Peter von Tiesenhausen

This granite sculpture of a boat in 5 segments inspires contemplation around ideas of water, its purity, and the passing of time.

About this work

Artist Peter von Tiesenhausen was commissioned by the City's waterworks division to create a permanent sculpture celebrating 100 years of providing clean water to Calgarians. Sited on the grounds of the historic facility, the sculpture overlooks the Glenmore Reservoir, a source of Calgary's drinking water. Sculpted from the whitest granite available in the world, "Duration" is a lasting monument symbolizing water purity. It's a place for Calgarians to come and contemplate the idea of water, our place in this world and what it takes to sustain our way of life.
