About the work

The image shows a stylized version of peonies, which is partially inspired by both Russian and Ukrainian flower art. According to the article about Bridgeland on Wikipedia, the community of Riverside was established by Russian-German immigrants during Calgary's first population boom in the 1880s, when Riverside was known as Germantown. At the beginning of the 20th century, immigrants were mostly of Italian and Ukrainian origin. Thus I thought it would be suiting to pay tribute to two countries in a way of mimicking the style of drawing. As far as the flowers themselves go, peonia (Italian) also known as “rose without thorns”, peonie, peonies, are the symbol of discretion, but also a traditional flower to be given to your love. Other common peony meanings include prosperity, good fortune, a happy marriage, riches, honor, and compassion.
