Still wearing his suit, his tie loosened, with a slight forward slouch to his seated posture, this figure appears weary and thoughtful.

Robert Edwards, the maverick publisher and editor of Calgary's Eye Opener newspaper from 1902-1922, was intense, witty, inventive and often combative. He was a tireless defender of his community and could be a fierce opponent. In this small character study, the artist imagines him in an unguarded moment at the end of a working day. Created by prominent Métis artist David Garneau, a well-known contemporary artist, curator, writer, and professor, this ceramic sculpture is part of a series of five figures representing Alberta's past. In 1984 when he was commissioned to create sculptures of historic Calgarians to commemorate Calgary's 100th birthday, he was a 22 year-old student. At the time he was greatly influenced by the small-scale character studies in ceramic by Saskatchewan artist Joe Fafard.
