Rundle Mini Gallery

Chris Lukas Maier, Vignettes

The Northeast Mini Galleries include a series of 10 mini galleries located at community associations across Calgary’s northeast. The mini galleries feature 30 artists throughout the year — each exhibition showcases 10 local artists, selected by a local curator, for a four-month period. The current exhibition, The Responsibility to Wonder, is curated by Genevieve Farrell and features 12 artworks by 10 artists. Through sculpture, painting, illustration, beadwork and mosaic, the exhibition explores curiosity, connection and the relationships that shape our communities. The artworks are on display from June to September 2026

About this work

About This Installation

My work is grounded in a profound appreciation of human-made marks, scratches and textures within the urban environment. These layered and often unintentional marks that blemish urban spaces prove to be compositionally striking and haphazard, while also reflecting the interconnectedness of the city and the people who move through it.

My practice is focused on capturing and formalizing these marks in the gallery in order to stress the importance they hold in a contemporary and historical context. I choose to examine the relationship between intentional and unintentional mark making and their different meanings.

It is my goal to encourage the viewer to embrace the broad variety of marks made within the urban landscape to better understand the global issues that we deal with today, as well as to remind them that outside of the narrow confines of our own lives, we are part of a greater collective.

I am very much inspired by Abstract Expressionist paintings, Art Informel and metro station mosaics. My work emphasizes the idea that the fading blemishes left in metropolitan areas are as ephemeral and important as the collective lives and stories of the people who knowingly or unknowingly create them.

About the Mini Gallery Program

The Northeast Mini Galleries Public Art Program includes 10 mini galleries, located at different community associations. The mini galleries feature 30 artists throughout the year — each exhibition showcases 10 local artists, selected by a local curator, for a four-month period.

The Northeast Mini Galleries program started in 2023 as part of the City of Calgary’s Northeast Public Art Initiative which brings several public art projects to Calgary’s northeast communities, supports local artists, enhances northeast neighbourhoods and reflects the people who live in the communities where the art will be located.

This initiative aims to build amazing spaces for people to come together and provides opportunities for local artists to showcase their talent while celebrating the diversity of artforms, people and cultures represented in northeast Calgary.
