In this work, artist Paul Slipper, along with Cameron Small and Amiel Logan, offer a literal and lighthearted interpretation of a self-made woman: here, we see the figure carving herself out of granite.
"Self-Made Woman" was carved during WorldSkills Calgary 2009, a competition that brought attention to the value of skilled work in the trades, as well as in technology and the service industry. The sculpture, which was carved in Calgary's Olympic Plaza before being moved to the SAIT campus, has both rough and smooth surfaces. These surfaces show how the work was made, with general forms being carved out and then gradually refined to produce a smooth and finished surface. Slipper trained at the Emily Carr School of Art (now the Emily Carr University of Art and Design) and currently lives in Vancouver.
