This exuberant bronze family enjoys playing outside, whatever the weather! Approximately life size, this sculpture shows two adults energetically swinging two children in the air.

Created by American artist Stanley Bleifeld, famous for his figurative bronze sculptures, this joyous work is both realistic and fanciful. While the figures are sculpted with great precision, the dynamic composition magically suspends time. Propelled by the centrifugal force set in motion by their parents' energetic swinging, the children seem to fly. The artist described the subject as "self-explanatory, and if it shows some exuberance and joy, it was what I felt about this phase of life." "The Alberta Family" was a gift to the City of Calgary from the Devonian Group of Charitable Foundations. One of the Group's members, Donald Harvie, viewed a smaller version of this sculpture while travelling in California. He later commissioned the larger sculpture you see here. Artist Stanley Bleifeld (1924-2011) was a well-known American sculptor. Although he began his career as a painter, a trip to Italy inspired him to focus on sculpture. His works can be seen in several American cities, including Washington, DC, and Richmond, Virginia.
