Over 600 gargoyles were comissioned by Marshall sometime between 1911-14 for Calgary’s Greyhound building, the original office of the Calgary Herald (at 1st St and 7th Ave, SW). Among the gargoyles are lizards, monkeys, fish, and crabs, but the outstanding pieces of the collection feature stylized caricatures of the newspaper staff, from the editor to the janitor.
In 1966, the Greyhound building lost some gargoyles due to facade crumbling, and in 1972, the building was demolished. The gargoyles were saved, however, and can now be found in various public and private collections, including the University of Calgary. Most are under the care of Telus, and the company plans to install them in the Telus Sky Lobby or return them to the facade of the Len Werry building, the company’s current Calgary headquarters.
