Topiaries are structures grown from nature, but designed by humans. They are often fanciful, featuring large geometric shapes or figural compositions. Complicated and detailed they are commonly viewed as living sculptures. In the artist's words a "...topiary sculpture is about cultivation and that can mean many things. It can be a cultivation of community, a cultivation of ideas or the cultivation of gardens and life." References to the Blackfoot Nation have been included through the use of circles in both this and the metal quilt installation. The Blackfoot, one of the oldest aboriginal nations to inhabit Calgary, often incorporate circles into many of their creations, and the inclusion of this motif acts as a way to continue their connection to this site and to the community of Calgary.
