A 950-foot-long mural adorning both sides of the 4th Street S.E. Underpass, featuring vibrant geometric patterns and symbolic imagery that celebrates community and connection.

Corridor of Connection is a monumental mural by Calgary-based artist Michelle Hoogveld, commissioned by Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) in 2018 as part of a broader revitalization effort in East Village. Stretching 950 feet across both walls of the 4th Street S.E. underpass, the mural creates a vibrant, connective corridor between East Village and Calgary’s emerging Culture + Entertainment District.
This bold, immersive work transforms a functional piece of infrastructure into a powerful visual landmark. A patchwork of brightly coloured triangles filled with symbols—flowing water, nature, lips, animals, and abstract patterns—tells a layered story of community, cultural convergence, and shared energy. Inspired by the nearby Bow and Elbow Rivers and shaped through conversations with Elder Adrian Wolfleg, the mural also weaves in the traditions of Indigenous storytelling and oral history.
Among its standout elements are a butterfly symbolizing a vision or dream into the future, a peace sign covered in paint of the artist’s own hand, and the playful silhouette of a friend mid-backflip—a celebration of joy and spontaneity in the city. Like all great public art, Corridor of Connection sparks emotion, invites interpretation, and brings people together. It’s a gateway, a gathering space, and a vivid reflection of the creativity and culture that defines this part of Calgary.
This mural is situated on the 4th Street Underpass, a pedestrian/cyclist corridor, making it easily accessible.
