This bronze bust is a small piece of Mexican history that was generously given to the City of Calgary.

The man shown in the bust, José María Morelos y Pavon (1765-1815), was a key figure in the Mexican War of Independence. Both a Roman Catholic priest and a revolutionary, he led multiple campaigns for Mexican independence from the Spanish Empire. Although he was executed prior the end of Spanish rule in 1821, he is widely respected as a Mexican hero whose efforts were essential to the country's autonomy. The bust of Morelos was a gift to the City of Calgary from Mexico. It marks 200 years of Mexican independence. It was officially unveiled in Calgary's Tomkins Park on September 16, 2011, Mexico's annual day of independence.
